Hank Campbell In the latest episode of Cosmos we got some history regarding how science has tried to converge on the age of the Earth. With that, we also got another jab at religion. Why use yet another religious contrast from hundreds of years ago to show the awesome power of science now? Is there so little actual imagination in their Ship Of The Imagination? It’s a short bit and so less grievous to our intellectual senses than the 25 percent of episode 1 they devoted to creating an alternate history of Giordano Bruno , but in this case what is interesting is not what they add in, but what they leave out. In , Archbishop James Ussher of Ireland calculated a date for the creation of the universe using the Bible as a reference.
How Science Figured Out the Age of Earth
As a terrestrial planet, Earth is located within the Inner Solar System between between Venus and Mars which are also terrestrial planets. But the most remarkable thing about our planet is its diversity. Not only are there an endless array of plants, animals, avians, insects and mammals, but they exist in every terrestrial environment.
So how exactly did Earth come to be the fertile, life-giving place we all know and love?
Dating creation is the attempt to provide an estimate of the age of Earth or the age of the universe as understood through the origin myths of various religious s traditional beliefs held that Planet Earth, or the entire Universe, was brought into being in a grand creation event by one or more these cultures developed calendars, many began to ponder the question of.
This age is obtained from radiometric dating and is assumed by evolutionists to provide a sufficiently long time-frame for Darwinian evolution. And OE Christians theistic evolutionists see no problem with this dating whilst still accepting biblical creation, see Radiometric Dating – A Christian Perspective. This is the crucial point: Some claim Genesis in particular, and the Bible in general looks mythical from this standpoint. A full discussion of the topic must therefore include the current scientific challenge to the OE concept.
This challenge is mainly headed by Creationism which teaches a young-earth YE theory. A young earth is considered to be typically just 6, years old since this fits the creation account and some dating deductions from Genesis. The crucial point here is: Accepted Dating Methods Here we outline some dating methods , both absolute and relative, that are widely accepted and used by the scientific community.
Absolute dating supplies a numerical date whilst relative dating places events in time-sequence; both are scientifically useful. Radiometric Dating This is based upon the spontaneous breakdown or decay of atomic nuclei.
Why College Dating Is So Messed Up?
The first Sumerian king Alulim , at Eridu , is described as reigning for 28, years, followed by several later kings of similar periods. In total these antediluvian kings ruled for , years from the time when “the kingship was lowered from heaven” to the time when “the flood” swept over the land. A layer of riverine sediments, radiocarbon dated to ca. Polychrome pottery from the Jemdet Nasr period — BC was discovered immediately below the Shuruppak flood stratum.

Early history[ edit ] In Ancient Greece , Aristotle BCE observed that fossils of seashells in rocks resembled those found on beaches — he inferred that the fossils in rocks were formed by living animals, and he reasoned that the positions of land and sea had changed over long periods of time. Leonardo da Vinci — concurred with Aristotle’s interpretation that fossils represented the remains of ancient life.
Steno argued that rock layers or strata were laid down in succession, and that each represents a “slice” of time. He also formulated the law of superposition, which states that any given stratum is probably older than those above it and younger than those below it. While Steno’s principles were simple, applying them proved challenging. Over the course of the 18th century geologists realized that: Sequences of strata often become eroded, distorted, tilted, or even inverted after deposition Strata laid down at the same time in different areas could have entirely different appearances The strata of any given area represented only part of Earth’s long history The Neptunist theories popular at this time expounded by Abraham Werner — in the late 18th century proposed that all rocks had precipitated out of a single enormous flood.
It has been said[ by whom? This theory, known as ” Plutonism", stood in contrast to the"Neptunist” flood-oriented theory.
Primary source references As a preface to this document, I want to point out that it is a shame that we have to continue to refute the same arguments that evolutionists keep bringing up over and over again in their attempts to argue against the fact of creation, which fact has been well established since the day the earth was created ex nihilo several thousand years ago. It is also a shame that the masses have bought all this based on some circular reasoning about fossils, where fossils tend to be found buried, similarities between various life forms, the presence of certain decay products in rocks, and other inherently speculative arguments about the past, based on phenomena that exist in the present.
If I hope to accomplish anything, it will be to simply encourage critical thinking. One must get past the arguments ad populum that its popularity counts for something , ad hominem that if you attack the person making the argument, this counts for something , and especially ad baculum that there are people who have the clout to decree it as true , to ask the key questions and challenge the unsubstantiated assumptions and thinking of those who would hold to the evolution position. Today there are an increasing number of anti-creationist authors who are producing books and periodicals that make this relatively brief presentation insufficient to deal with all the points in dispute.

The Radiometric Dating Game Radiometric dating methods estimate the age of rocks using calculations based on the decay rates of radioactive elements such as uranium, strontium, and potassium. On the surface, radiometric dating methods appear to give powerful support to the statement that life has existed on the earth for hundreds of millions, even billions, of years. We are told that these methods are accurate to a few percent, and that there are many different methods.
We are told that of all the radiometric dates that are measured, only a few percent are anomalous. This gives us the impression that all but a small percentage of the dates computed by radiometric methods agree with the assumed ages of the rocks in which they are found, and that all of these various methods almost always give ages that agree with each other to within a few percentage points.
Since there doesn’t seem to be any systematic error that could cause so many methods to agree with each other so often, it seems that there is no other rational conclusion than to accept these dates as accurate. However, this causes a problem for those who believe based on the Bible that life has only existed on the earth for a few thousand years, since fossils are found in rocks that are dated to be over million years old by radiometric methods, and some fossils are found in rocks that are dated to be billions of years old.

Dating in college has never been easy. But today, with everyone texting with emoji and navigating an increasingly fluid sexuality, it can seem almost impossible. Charlotte Lieberman, a recent Harvard grad, takes on what’s wrong with love on campus. By Charlotte Lieberman Feb 10, It is 9 p. He asked me out last night. Maybe we’ll cross paths tomorrow night?
After all, we are millennials and old-fashioned courtship no longer exists. I read with interest the numerous other articles, books, and blog posts about the"me, me, me generation” as Time’s Joel Stein calls us , our rejection of chivalry, and our hookup culture — which is supposedly the downfall of college dating. I’m lured in by these trend pieces and their sexy headlines and consistently let down by their conclusions about my generation’s moral depravity, narcissism, and distaste for true love.
