Since its inception 17 months ago, Tinder, along with other online dating apps such as Grindr, Hinge and Twine, has had a growing presence on college campuses. Mateen said they strategically aimed the app at a college demographic because they knew the app would succeed if it resonated with college students. Sarah Flood, a second-year biology student who met her boyfriend more than a year ago on Tinder, joined without any expectations. Flood said that because of the large number of students on campus, it can be hard to meet personable, funny people.
The two texted and exchanged phone calls for a month before finally meeting in person. Though it was a bit awkward at first, Flood said that after a few minutes of meeting, it was like the two had known each other for a long time.

Desperate singles gather and have a brief few minutes with a member of the opposite sex in hopes of feeling a spark of chemistry that leads to a relationship. And, yet, that is how the opportunity was presented to me: Seventeen different organizations would be given two minutes each to talk to 17 groups of freshmen, covering roughly new students at the University of Montevallo.
Several questions came to mind as I prepared for the opportunity: What will I be allowed to say? How do I convince these students to get involved in a campus ministry through a two-minute speech? Will they even be listening? The campus gymnasium bubbled with the thrum of voices as the students found their way into orientation groups and took their seats. As I made my way from group to group, I noticed several things.
First, in each group there were students listening intently and many others who listlessly checked their phones.

The challenge is creating an environment where international students feel comfortable sharing and conversing with domestic students. In April , we learned that the International Library Cultural Exchange Interest Group of the Colorado Association of Libraries was sponsoring a grant that supported activities celebrating non-dominant cultures living in Colorado.
We spent four weeks working on submission documents due May , and in June we received confirmation that CAL funding would be granted to the CU Libraries for implementation during the academic year. Planning began right away for four Speed Friending events, along with an International Talent Show and a photo contest. Grant team planning, promotion and outreach efforts continued throughout the fall semester and into the spring. In the early stages of planning, the team contacted two Association of Research Libraries ARL members to get some tips and best practices from their experiences.
One of these institutions sent us guidelines and a list of icebreaker questions to help students get acquainted at the event. We adapted the questions by coming up with a set of themes such as hobbies, sports, travel, food and so on, with two or three icebreakers under each. They included questions like “how many languages do you speak? See the list of full prompts under Attachments at right. Marketing The grant team used email, social media and print marketing strategies that started with promotional fliers in international student orientation packets.

Recent reports are easier to find, but notice how these stretch back to the s. And these are just the cases we heard about through the media. How many more complaints were quietly hidden by universities? Recent stories about sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual misconduct, stalking, violations of dating policies, violations of campus pornography policies, and similar violations in academia are NOT A FLUKE! I decided to organize these by discipline and to include both faculty and administrators.
I did, however, include Athletic Directors and people in similar administrative positions. Note that I left off of the list any cases involving accusations alone without investigation, resignation, admission, administrative action, legal activity, etc. Specifically, these are cases involving faculty and administrators engaging in sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual misconduct, stalking, violations of dating policies, violations of campus pornography policies, and similar violations, and where: The year listed below refers to the year in which the sexual harassment occurred, in which it was publicized, there was a university or legal finding of fact, or there was an admission of fact by the accused.
Freedom of Information requests are resulting in the release of university investigative reports. I am listing these reports under the date of release to make it clear when these cases came to light.

The campus interview is an intractable tradition, despite the extensive literature on the inadequacy and even the misleading nature of this ritual. We have all made the mistake of hiring a practiced interviewee who turns out, once hired, to be far less skilled at doing the job. We do that when we require prospective faculty hires to perform a teaching demonstration. Similarly, we should ask candidates for public relations positions, for example, to design and write a mini campaign.
But the candidate interview will not disappear any time soon. After years of experience in interviewing and being interviewed for campus positions, I have distilled the interview questions into the equivalent of speed dating, starting with three: These questions can keep candidates focused on what we really need to know. This question is designed to ascertain why candidates think they are right for the job. A few years ago, I asked a finalist why she wanted to be a provost. The next question also depends on extensive thought and research.
